DIY Growler for Overlanding and Camping – How to Turn Your Growler Into a Mini-Keg
Lately, I’ve really enjoyed visiting the unique micro-breweries that have emerged with the recent growth of small-batch breweries in North America. Nowadays, most breweries sell growlers or allow you to fill up your own in order to take your favorite beers to-go. Unfortunately, unless you plan on getting to that beer right away, it tends to go flat quickly. And there’s not much worse than a flat beer.
I was super excited when I came across DrinkTanks Growlers because their rugged design, but what really caught my eye was the DrinkTanks Keg Cap. The Keg Cap is essentially a unique growler cap that allows you to turn your 128oz or 64oz DrinkTanks Growler into your own personal mini-keg. With the Keg Cap accessory kit from DrinkTanks, you can keep the beer in your growler fresh until the final drop.

How the DrinkTanks Keg Cap Works
The DrinkTanks Keg Cap works by allowing you to pressurize your Growler through the Keg Cap’s patented C02 Pressure Valve system. Two 16 gram threaded C02 cartridges along with a C02 injector are included with the Keg Cap system. I found it really cool that these are the same type of C02 cartridges that a mountain biker or cyclist would carry with them to help air up flat tires. Since I like riding bikes, I have several of these c02 cartridges lying around my house as it is. Replacement C02 cartridges can be purchased through DrinkTanks, or even at your local bike shop. The C02 cartridges thread directly into the injector cap.
After threading the injector to the C02 cartridge, you simply place the injector on top of the charging valve and press down for about half a second. You’ll feel the C02 cartridge get cold as the C02 is injected into the growler. Please note, that your growler can’t be filled all the way to the top when doing so. You’ll need to leave room in the growler for the C02. DrinkTanks recommends leaving around 12oz of space in the growler. The Keg Cap system is designed to hold 10psi, after that the relief valve kicks in to maintain a proper PSI.
The DrinkTanks’s Tap Hose can be adjusted in length. Just pull it the desired length and serve your fresh and cold beer. The Keg Cap kit can also be used to carbonate water or even drinks like Kombucha! I’ll definitely be bringing my DrinkTanks and Keg Cap with me when I head to Mammoth this summer and visit some of my favorite breweries there.
