Overview of chair

Everyone wants a chair that is easy to get in and out of, especially after a long day of hiking and/or wheeling. With the bottom of the chair being 16 inches off the ground it checks that box. This is a huge advantage compared to the 5 inches of clearance that the Cascade Low Profile Camp Chair has to offer. It’s the perfect height to stay close to the fire on cold winter nights while also reclining and staying cool during the hot summer months.

Favorite Aspects

Having the ventilated back and sides allows you to stay cool during hot summer nights. I really enjoy having the high-back chair with the pillow so you can recline without straining your neck. And for those who like to star gaze, you can adjust the location of the pillow so that instead of having it on the back of your head, you can shift it to the back of your neck. This gives you a little extra comfort while looking up.

If you are like me, you may have back pains after wheeling all day. The design of this chair allows you to lean back just enough to release some of the pressure.

Another aspect that is very useful is the easy-to-clean material. The seat itself is made out of a high-quality fabric. Whether you get loose dirt, mud, or food, I have found that a little bit of water cleans it off right away.

Manufactured Details

Cascade spared no detail when making this chair. For the feet of the aluminum chair, they included “Sand feet”. It is a small feature of the chair but has a huge impact on its use. These help prevent you from sinking into the sand, dirt, or mud by creating a wider surface area. It allows for easy relocation without the annoying tug of the feet stuck in the ground.  I enjoy this feature for when it comes time to pack up camp. I am not worried about having to dig my chair out and clean the feet.

Packing and Transporting

The chair collapses down to 19″ x 5″ x 5″. This leaves plenty of room for you to store more critical gear like recovery gear and coolers. It is very durable so I am not too worried about trying to keep the chair on top of different items. If you are running low on space it can fit in-between the seats in the 3rd Gen 4 Runners with ease. Having a chair that collapses this way is much more space-efficient compared to the classic fold-out camping chair.

Things to Consider

I have owned this chair for a little over two years now and have used it many times. I have noticed that the seat has begun to sag closer to the crossbar. I am 145 pounds and it has taken two years to get to this point. At the point where it is now, whenever I sit on an incline the seat touches the crossbar. Keeping it level avoids this problem, but we all know that campsites are never fully level.

Ultralight High-Back Camp Chair Stitching

When setting up the chair it can be difficult to get the aluminum frame to fit into the stitching. The stitching is so tight-knit that it does not want to allow any wiggle room. It takes a little bit of twisting and pulling but it is manageable.

The final consideration for this chair is that there is no built-in cup holder. Unless you are next to your bumper or cooler there is no good place to position a drink without spilling it or having to droop down to pick it up. Having said that, Cascade has recently released a 2nd generation of the chair that addresses this problem. The 2nd generation has a built-in cupholder along with extra fabric for an armrest.

Final Thoughts

Ultralight High-Back Camp Chair with 1998 4 Runner

The Cascade Mountain Tech Ultralight High-back Camp Chair has proven to be very useful during the many camping excursions it has encountered. Having the high-back aluminum design ensures a comfortable seat for every night you go camping.  I purchased mine through Costco which was a little bit cheaper than the Cascade Mountain Tech website at the time.

Cascade has released a second-generation version of the chair which includes a much-needed cup holder and armrest. Once my current chair has run its course, the second generation will be the next one I purchase.

Overall I would say that this chair is worth the investment. The high-back chair with an adjustable pillow eliminates the awkward seating arrangements.  If you are looking for gear to make camping just a little bit more comfortable, consider trying the Cascade Mountain Tech Camp Chair.
